Come and explore the skill of Raku firing in this 2 day workshop with Jude Keogh and guest ceramicist John Daly.

RAKU

Raku is a fast, low-temperature firing technique originating from Japan where ceramic pots are removed from a kiln while still glowing hot and placed in combustible materials like sawdust or newspaper. This results in a unique, unpredictable finish with crackled glazes and vibrant colors.

WHAT TO EXPECT

In the first day of this 2 day workshop you will learn how to make pots that are especially suited to the Raku firing process. You will be introduced to process of Raku learning about the type of clay, glazes and safety aspects of Raku firing.

Your pots will then be bisque fired and ready for glazing the following week.

On the second day you will be able to glaze and fire your pots using the exciting technique of Raku. This includes taking your red hot pot out of the kiln and placing it into metal buckets with various combustibles which will create unique glaze effects.

IMPORTANT: Raku firing involves handling very hot ceramic pieces.

Please wear long sleeved cotton or woolen shirts (no synthetic materials) and long denim or similar heavy natural material pants.

Please wear enclosed leather shoes.

No exceptions.

Participants will not be able to remove hot ceramic pieces from the kiln if the appropriate clothing is not worn.

All materials and safety equipment will be provided.
