RAKU
Raku is a fast, low-temperature firing technique originating from Japan where ceramic pots are removed from a kiln while still glowing hot and placed in combustible materials like sawdust or newspaper. This results in a unique, unpredictable finish with crackled glazes and vibrant colors.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You will be introduced to the process of Raku firing, learning about the type of clay, glazes and safety aspects of Raku firing. We will be firing our pots using the exciting technique of Raku. This includes taking your red hot pot out of the kiln and placing it into metal buckets with various combustibles which will create unique glaze effects.
You can bring along your own Raku pots or bisque fired Raku pots will be available to glaze and fire. If you are bringing your own pots please make sure they are bisque fired and made from a suitable raku clay body and no more than 20cm x 20cm. You will be glazing your pots in the morning then after the lunch break we will fire them in the Raku kiln.
